Tour Plan

DAY 01: ARRIVAL AT KILIMANJARO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (JRO) – MOSHI   Elevation: 894M/ 880m - Distance: 40 km

Upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), you will be warmly received by the team of Shikhar Travels. After exchanging some welcome pleasantries with the team, you will hop in a car and get ready to take a ride towards the Moshi Town or you could say, Base Camp for this expedition. Moshi is a quaint little town, silently perched somewhere between the expansive coffee plantation region where the gorgeous skyline of Mt. Kilimanjaro dominates its beauty. It is approximately 40 km away from JRO airport and is also the working capital of the Kilimanjaro region.Once you reach there, you will first check in to your hotel room with your Govt. ID and then will be asked to gather for a brief introductory session. In this session, you will meet the guide for this expedition who will teach you some infamous trekking skills and also, hand you your trekking gears. Afterward, you will be free to enjoy your overnight stay here in Moshi.

DAY 02: MOSHI – MARANGU GATE – MANDARA HUT Elevation: 1,900M to 2,700M - Distance: 8 km - Hiking Time: 4-5 hours - Habitat: Montane Forest

After having breakfast, you will first be accompanied to the Kilimanjaro National Park gate where you will be asked to go through some mandatory paperwork for this expedition, and later, you will be transferred to the starting point of the trekking journey.From here, you will harness your trekking essentials and get ready to make your first hike towards Mt. Kilimanjaro. But today you will hike to Mandara Hut for which you will pass through Marangu which is famous for its dense rainforest area and harboring too many water streams. So, you will follow a very wilding trail up to the Mandara Hut and upon reaching there, you will be provided your bunk beds. If you still don’t feel tired then, you can go for an evening walk to Maundi Crater where you can catch breathtaking views of gleaming lakes that are proudly shared by Tanzania and Kenya. Otherwise, you can simply enjoy your overnight at Mandara Hut.

DAY 03: MANDARA HUT – HOROMBO HUT  Elevation: 2,700M to 3,700M - Distance: 11 km - Hiking Time: 5-6 hours - Habitat: Heath and Moorland

After having a healthy breakfast to reenergize yourself, you will get ready to leave for Horombo Hut. Horombo Hut campsite is perched atop the Mawenzi's ridges on the Southeastern part of Kilimanjaro Mountain, especially near the edge of the moorland region. So, for Horombo hut campsite, you can expect to be walking on a rocky region and a slightly leveled path but still, you will have to make your way through the slippery region.
And in approximately 5-6 hours of long hiking, you will reach the Horombo Hut campsite area and get settled into your bunk beds for the night. You can also catch a splendid view of several peaks like Mawenzi, Kibo, and the Maasai Steppe.

DAY 04: HOROMBO HUT (3,700M) - ZEBRA ROCKS (3,980M) - HOROMBO HUT (4,700M) Elevation: 3,700M to 4,700M - Distance: 4 km - Hiking Time: 1-2 hours - Habitat: Heath and Moorland

Since you will be climbing towards the greater altitude region, so your body will face some challenges, in order to acclimatize to the increased elevation, you will make a short trip to the Zebra Rocks today. Zebra rocks are a set of large volcanic erupted rocks on the Mt. Kilimanjaro path which slightly resembles the zebra pattern. And it is also locally called a lava cliff where volcanoes spurt out the mineral-rich streams, turning the rocks white and black.
After coming down from this short hike, you will be served a hot simmering lunch to provide your body with some nutrients for the next day’s hike. Afterward, you are free to enjoy the whole witnessing the inexplicable beauty of this region.

DAY 05: HOROMBO HUT (3,700M) - KIBO HUT (4,700M) Elevation: 3,700M to 4,700M - Distance: 9 km - Hiking Time: 6-7 hours - Habitat: Alpine Desert

Once you finish your breakfast, you will get ready for a tough hike to the Kibo Hut standing at a towering elevation of 4,700m. Kibo Hut is generally used by the team of hikers as a resting place before their journey to the summit. On your journey to the Kibo Hut located on the eastern side of Kibo Volcanic Cone, the vegetation area would suddenly change into a mostly flat and barren alpine desert region. You will also pass through the famous ‘last waterpoint area’ – which is a large plateau located between Mawenzi and Kibo peak.

Somewhere around 6-7 hours, you will reach the Kibo Hut campsite area and fall into your bunk beds after having dinner. Because tomorrow, you will have to get ready to make an early morning hike towards the summit, somewhere around 23:00 hr.

DAY 06: KIBO HUT (4,700M) – UHURU PEAK (5,895M) – HOROMBO HUT (3,700M) Elevation: 4,700M to 5,895M and down to 3,700M - Distance: 6 km up/ 15 km down/ 9 km to Horombo Hiking Time: 6-7 hours up/ 4-5 hours down - Habitat: Stone scree and ice-capped mountain

Good news! The so-called Kilimanjaro Summit Day has arrived so, you will get ready for an early morning hike because the lava ash will still be frozen at this time. Uhuru Peak, the dream journey of many, is perched at an altitude of 5,895m above sea level and is considered the highest free-standing peak of Africa. Taking you through a breathtaking journey filled with a surreal view of Tanzania, Uhuru will be a mesmerizing journey for you.
For Uhuru Peak, you will ascend towards a greater height and use only headlight to light the way. You will first pass Hans Meyer Cave standing at an altitude of 5,200m which was named after the German Geographer – Hans Meyer who was the first to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro. Next, you will stopover at Gilman’s Point at 5,715m which ends the path filled with scree and takes you to the edge of the crater rim where you can watch the breathtaking view of sunrise.
Only after climbing for 1-2 hours, you will reach Uhuru Peak which is also called ‘The Roof of Africa’. After grasping the success of climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro, you will get ready to descend back through the same path. You will enjoy a short stopover at Kibo Hut where you will eat your lunch and then, descend back to Horombo Hut and retire for the night.

DAY 07: HOROMBO HUT – MARANGU GATE – MOSHI Elevation: 3,700M to 1,900M - Distance: 19 km - Hiking Time: 5-8 hours - Habitat: Moorland and Montane Forest

As you start to descend back to the Base Camp of Kilimanjaro Peak, the surrounding will start to get on the greener and denser side. You will first make a brief stopover at Mandara Hut where you will enjoy lunch with a gorgeous view of Mt. Kilimanjaro. Then, you will once again hike through the dense tropical rainforest of Mandara until you reach its Gate.
After arriving at the Mandara gate, you will say goodbye to your mountain crew and be transferred to your hotel room. You can enjoy a hot shower to release yourself from the tiredness and can later, rejoice in the victory of climbing the summit.

Day 08 – Departure from Tanzania

After having breakfast, you can either be transferred to JRO Airport or you can enjoy the whole as per your interest before your time for the flight. You can explore the beautiful town of Moshi during your free time and can also shop for souvenirs for the people back home.
